Lakeway and The Austin Hill Country

The City of Lakeway and the nearby communities of The Village of The Hills, Hudson Bend, Bee Cave, Briarcliff, and Spicewood are located along the southern shores of Lake Travis, an 18,930 acre reservoir whose serpentine path winds for 65 miles through the majestic Texas Hill Country. The scenic beauty of this area, combined with controlled growth and outstanding recreational resources have made it legendary as one of the most desirable places to live, work, and play in the entire southwest.

Conveniently located just 20 miles west of downtown Austin, Lakeway and the surrounding communities offer their residents and visitors suburban conveniences and a casual, leisurely lifestyle. With our excellent schools, club offerings (golf, tennis, fitness, bridge, theatre, etc.) social events (sports tournaments, cookouts, holiday parades, etc.) we have attracted a healthy mix of working Austin families, retirees, and second-home weekenders.  There is truly something here for everyone.

Climate
It's a common saying in many parts of the country, but certainly true here: "If you don't like the weather in Central Texas, just wait a minute."  Overall, our climate is temperate with mild winters and relatively low humidity.  We receive only about 32 inches of rain a year, which means the sun shines more than 300 days a year. Temperatures average 74 to 94 degrees in the summer and 40 to 70 degrees in the winter. The average daily temperature is a lovely 78 degrees.

Development
The protection and enhancement of the delicate environmental heritage of the Austin Hill Country has been and continues to be a major goal.  In Lakeway, the original comprehensive Concept Development Plan charted a course that would control development and have the least impact on the environment.

There have been refinements to the plan over the years, but we continue to strive to create a community in harmony with the land.  A wide variety of wildlife, including herds of whitetail deer, thrives in this magnificent preserve.

Schools
Lakeway and the surrounding communities of The Village of The Hills, Bee Cave, Hudson Bend, and Briarcliff are located in the Lake Travis Independent School District.   Established in 1981, this rapidly growing district has positioned itself as a leader in education in the Austin area with a reputation for high achievement in public education. More than a third of the faculty has graduate degrees, and teachers average 10 years of experience.  The student teacher ratio is one of the lowest in the state.  Projected school population in 2008 is slightly over 6,000.

Golf/Tennis
There are six excellent golf courses in the Lakeway/Bee Cave area. Lakeway alone has four 18-hole courses. Yaupon Creek and Live Oak in the city of Lakeway, the Jack Nicklaus designed Hills Country Club course, and the Flintrock Falls course, also designed by Jack Nicklaus. Yaupon golfers enjoy picturesque views of the hill country and lake. The Live Oak course is lined with beautiful Texas live oak trees.  Both have pro shops and grills.  The Hills course, home to the Kinko's/FedEx Classic,  features its renowned 15-foot natural waterfall at the seventh hole. Both The Hills and Flintrock Falls clubhouses offer fine and casual dining, pro-shops and locker rooms.  In addition, the Falconhead PGA course (public) and the Spanish Oaks  golf course are located in Bee Cave... just a few minutes drive from the heart of Lakeway.

The Academy of Golf in The Hills is one of the most advanced golf instruction centers in the country.  Its three holes (a par 3, 4, and 5) provide a range of challenges and learning opportunities with multiple pin placements, fairway bunkers, uneven lie mounds, and varying cuts of rough.

The World of Tennis has been selected as one of the top 25 facilities in the world by World Tennis Magazine and as one of the 50 greatest tennis facilities in the nation by Tennis Magazine. It features 26 courts, including two indoor courts.  The Lakeway Tennis Center, located across from Live Oak clubhouse, has 6 tennis courts.
